Mr Abulafi graduated from Cairo University and obtained fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1988. He was awarded a Master of Surgery degree (MS) from the University of London in 1993 for his research work on the role of intraoperative photodynamic therapy in colorectal cancer. After a period of surgical training at the Royal London and St. Thomas' Hospitals, Muti was appointed as a consultant colorectal and general surgeon at Croydon University Hospital. He has since developed a wide ranging academic and research interest. Mr Abulafi is also involved in teaching young surgeons and he organises an annual surgical teaching course at the Pelican Centre in Basingstoke.
