Arm Lift (brachioplasty)
Arm lift, also called brachioplasty or arm reduction, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin, and fat, to reshape and provide a better contour to your upper arms.
What is an arm lift?
An arm lift tightens and reshapes the area between your arm pit and your elbow, often referred to as ‘bingo wings’.
An arm lift is usually performed under general anaesthetic and as a day case if performed alone and takes up to two hours. Your surgeon will make a long incision on the inner arm between your armpit and elbow. They will remove skin and fat and lift the remaining skin and tissue. Liposuction can also be performed with the arm lift.
Does an arm lift procedure leave you with scars after the procedure?
Yes, arm lift surgery will leave you with permanent scars on the inner arms running vertically between your armpit and your elbow. However, your surgeon will usually make the cut in the least conspicuous place, usually on the inside or back of your arm, so that the scar is less visible. Your scars will flatten and lighten in colour within 6 to 12 months after your operation.
Your surgeon will discuss with you the pattern of your scar based on the amount of excess skin to be removed so that you know exactly what to expect. You will have the opportunity to ask our expert plastic surgeons any questions before agreeing to arm lift surgery.
Can an arm lift procedure be used for post weight loss?
An arm lift is usually carried out on patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and have been left with loose, sagging under arm skin. It can also be performed for loose excess skin that can be seen with ageing.
It is important to know that an arm lift is not a weight loss measure. An arm lift is recommended if you have reached your ideal weight and have been stable at that weight for 6 to 12 months and still have loose excess skin in the upper arm.
What is the recovery process after an arm lift procedure?
Your surgeon will give you specific instructions for your recovery and a follow up appointment will be arranged for you. You can expect the recovery time from an arm lift procedure to be two weeks. Dressings or bandages may be applied to your incisions, and a compression garment or an elastic bandage will be put on to minimise swelling. Any pain or discomfort you feel in the first 2 weeks can be managed with pain relief medication recommended by your surgeon.
You should be able to return to work and light activity after two weeks, depending on the nature of your job. Your surgeon will advise you when you can engage in more strenuous activities. Typically, this is four to six weeks after an arm lift. Swimming, heavy exercise or heavy lifting is not recommended for at least 4 weeks.
