What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty (also known as labial reduction), is a plastic surgical procedure to reshape or resize your small lips of skin on either side of your vaginal opening, called labia minora.

The procedure is performed under either local or general anaesthetic and takes approximately one hour. Any asymmetry in the size or shape of the labia minora can also be improved. Your surgeon will carefully mark out and remove the unwanted excess labial tissue and then sew the edges back together using fine, dissolvable stitches.

The main surgical labiaplasty techniques to remove the excess labial tissue include:

  • trim labiaplasty - uses a straight-line incision and removes the edge of your protruding labia so the scar is around the edge of your labia.
  • wedge labiaplasty - uses a V-shaped incision and maintains the edges of the labia. There is no scar on the front of the labia but this technique is usually less precise in removing the excess and reshaping the lips.
  • Your surgeon will discuss these techniques with you in detail during your consultation.

What are the benefits of labiaplasty?

There are both functional and cosmetic benefits of labiaplasty.

The functional benefits of a labiaplasty include less chafing and discomfort during exercise and physical activity, easier hygiene and possibly less urinary tract infections.

The cosmetic benefits of a labiaplasty include more confidence and ease when wearing tight-fitting work out tights and swimming costumes as well as restoring your youthful look after childbirth or aging. It aims to take away any concerns of an outward appearing or enlarged labium such as emotional or psychological distress during sex or while wearing tight fitting bottoms.

Does a labiaplasty procedure affect sensation?

Labiaplasty does not affect sensation. Following a labiaplasty you can continue to enjoy sex as before. Your clitoris is not operated on and so it will not be affected by this procedure. Some women experience improved sexual satisfaction and pleasure after labiaplasty as their labia is no longer anxious or embarrassed about an unusually shaped or enlarged labia.

Does labiaplasty leave scars?

A labiaplasty does leave permanent scars. The extent and type of scar will depend on the technique performed for your labiaplasty. However, the labial scarring tends to be minimal as the tissues have a good blood supply and heal well. Your labia also have a naturally slightly wrinkled appearance and the scars fade over time and are usually well concealed.

What is the recovery process after a labiaplasty procedure?

You should follow the specific instructions on post-operative care provided from your surgeon. You can expect to go home the same day as your labiaplasty.

After the procedure, there will be a sanitary pad over your vaginal area to catch any bleeding or oozing. You will need to shower daily, apply an antibiotic cream over the wounds twice daily and wear a clean sanitary pad for around 2 weeks following surgery.

You may have swelling, bruising, tenderness and slight pain in your vaginal area initially but this will subside within a few weeks after surgery. Loose underwear is advised for the first few weeks till the swelling and tenderness improves and you start to feel more comfortable.

You can expect to be off work for up to 10 to 14 days but this depends on the nature of your job.

You should avoid sexual activity for about four to six weeks and physical activity for up to four to six weeks.
