Thigh lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat, and aims to reshape your thighs to create a better contour to your thighs.
What is a thigh lift procedure?
A thigh lift surgery tightens and improves the overall appearance of your thighs by removing any excess skin folds in the upper inner thigh. A thigh lift is usually performed under general anaesthetic with an overnight stay and takes two to three hours depending on the extent of surgery.
Your surgeon will make elliptical incisions along the inside of your thigh. In a standard thigh lift, this is just in the groin area but where there is more excess skin, a long vertical incision along the length of the thigh may also be required. The type of incision required will be discussed between you and your surgeon and will depend on your amount of excess skin and fat, the location of your skin laxity and your expectations from the surgery. Liposuction can also be performed with the thigh lift procedure.
Does a thigh lift procedure leave you with scars after the procedure?
Like any surgery, a thigh lift will leave you with scars. Your surgeon will try to limit your scar length and perform the procedure in the least conspicuous place so that you can conceal it where possible. Your scars will flatten and lighten in colour within the year.
Your surgeon will discuss with you the length, location and pattern of your scar based on the amount of excess skin and fat to be removed so that you know what to expect. You will have the opportunity to ask our expert cosmetic surgeons any questions you have before agreeing to your thigh lift surgery.
Can a thigh lift procedure be used for post weight loss?
A thigh lift is usually carried out on patients who are now at a stable weight after significant weight loss that has resulted in loose fold of excess thigh skin.
A thigh lift is not a weight loss measure.
What is the recovery process after a thigh lift procedure?
A thigh lift is major surgery. It is important that you follow your surgeon’s post-operative advice regarding your recovery including how to care for your surgical wound and your pain relief. Your recovery time will depend on the extent of your procedure. A compression garment will be put on you following the procedure and will need to be worn for four to six weeks to help with swelling and discomfort.
You can expect to return to work after two to three weeks, so long as your job does not involve strenuous activities or standing for long periods of time. Your surgeon will advise you when you can return to more active activities. Swimming, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are not advised for four to six weeks.
Your initial bruising and swelling will disappear within a few months.
