Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery to enlarge and enhance the shape of your breasts using breast implants.
What is a breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is breast enlargement surgery performed to:
- Make your breasts larger if you feel they are too small or out of proportion with the rest of your body.
- Restore your breast size and shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss.
- Create symmetrical breasts if they are asymmetrical.
- Restore one or both of your breasts after mastectomy surgery.
Breast augmentation is carried out under a general anaesthetic and takes about an hour and a half. The procedure typically involves inserting and positioning breast implants through small incisions in the natural crease beneath each breast. The implant’s outer shell is made of silicone and can be filled with silicone, salines such as saltwater, or both. The breast implants are most often inserted under your breast tissue for a more natural appearance, or inserted under your chest muscles if you do not have enough breast skin and tissue to cover the implant. Finally, your surgeon will seal the incisions with stitches.

What is the breast augmentation recovery process?
You can expect to go home the same day of your breast augmentation.
You will be advised about your breast augmentation recovery including how to care for your wounds. You will be given a follow-up appointment with your surgeon before you leave the hospital.
You may need to wear a special supportive bra for several weeks to help your breasts settle after surgery.
Most women return to work after a week. This will depend on the type of job you do.
You should be able to get back to your normal activities within two to three weeks.
Regular gentle exercise after four weeks can help you recover as soon as possible. You should check with a member of our team or your GP before starting to exercise. It’s advisable to avoid strenuous exercise for a further two weeks.
After four weeks your implants will start to appear to be in a more natural-looking position.
At six to nine months your scars will begin to fade and the final result of your breast augmentation will be visible.
