Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is cosmetic surgery that enhances the appearance of your eyelids and creates a more youthful look. It can also improve your vision.
What is a blepharoplasty?
A blepharoplasty is a procedure to remove excess skin, tighten muscles, and reposition or remove fat around your eyelids.
It can take up to two hours to perform under local or general anaesthetic depending on the exact procedure you are having.
Your cosmetic surgeon will make incisions that follow the natural lines of your eyelids so that any resultant scars will be well concealed.
Fat deposits will be removed or repositioned, upper eyelid muscles tightened and excess skin removed through these cuts.
Fine sutures are then used to seal the incisions.
What are the benefits of a blepharoplasty?
As you age, your skin loses elasticity and gravity then takes hold, pulling your less firm skin down. Your eyes can suffer from droopy eyelids and slackened muscles that allow fat to bulge forward and can make you look older, tired or sad.
Blepharoplasty has a number of benefits to the ageing eye. These include:
- Rejuvenated and younger looking eyes
- Lift droopy skin to give you a perkier appearance and better vision where eyelids obstruct it,
- Better defined eyelid
- A confidence boost
- Easier eye make-up application.
What is the cost of a blepharoplasty?
The cost of a blepharoplasty at West Valley Hospital will depend on the exact eyelid procedure you have. Following your consultation with an expert cosmetic surgeon you will be provided with an all-inclusive Total Care price for your eye lid surgery.
How long does it take to recover from a blepharoplasty?
You should be able to go home the same day after your blepharoplasty. If you have a general anaesthetic you can go home when the affects have worn off.
You will need to follow your surgeon’s specific instructions regarding your recovery and aftercare. They may include information on caring for your eyes, medications to take or apply to help healing and reduce potential infection, and complications to look out for in your eyes and your overall health.
A follow up appointment will be made to check up on your recovery and healing.
You can expect to do light activities after one or two weeks that can be built up gradually, and return to work after two weeks.
You can drive when you feel comfortable and safe to do so.
You will have swelling and bruising around your eyes. When this settles the results of your blepharoplasty will gradually appear.
