Liposuction surgery, also known as lipoplasty, liposculpture, or lipo, removes stubborn pockets of fat that won’t shift despite regular exercise and healthy eating. It is performed to achieve an improved contour that is harmonious with your desired aesthetic appearance.
Liposuction surgery should not be engaged as a weight-loss tool. It is best performed if you are of normal weight and in body areas where you have tight skin.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction uses suction to get rid of fat from specific areas of your body. Common areas it is used on are buttocks, hips, thighs, hips, arms, neck, and stomach. Multiple areas can be treated at the same time.
Liposuction surgery aims to give a better shape and overall silhouette in the targeted areas. Most patients are only in the hospital for a few hours for liposuction, but an overnight stay may be recommended if a large amount of fat is removed. Various kinds of anaesthetic can be used including local and general anaesthetic. The decision will be based on your preference and the size of the areas to be treated.
Liposuction is carried out using a thin and hollow plastic tube called a cannula that is inserted through tiny incisions in your skin. Your surgeon will loosen the fat using the cannula. A powerful high-pressure vacuum is attached to the cannula that sucks out the fat deposits from your body. The incisions are sewn up using dissolvable stitches at the end of the operation and bandages placed over the treated area.
Your surgeon may inject solutions into the area being treated known as a wet technique, or use dry liposuction.

Tight bandages or compression garments will be placed on your treated area to reduce swelling and help your body adapt to its new shape. You may be advised to wear the support garment for two and six weeks after surgery. You should follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions as these are specific and individual to you. They will arrange a follow-up appointment to check how your recovery is going after your procedure.
The amount of time you will need off work will depend on the extent of your liposuction. If you had a small amount of fat removed, you should be able to return to work within a day or two. If you had more substantial liposuction you may need up to two weeks off work.
You can expect to resume normal activity at three weeks but avoid strenuous activity for 10 to 12 weeks. You should not drive until you feel comfortable wearing a seatbelt.
